How old is Methuselah, the oldest tree in the world?

What can we learn about climate changes from trees and how can we do this?

Are there any trees in the world that date back to the times of the dinosaurs?

Counting (15 min)

How can we calculate the age of a tree without cutting it down? The students measure the circumference of a tree and calculate its age on the basis of factors.

This part of the class takes place outside – the students measure living trees and calculate their age based on the growth factors table.

This is an interdisciplinary task. it is mathematical: You will make measurements and interpret data. However, you will also need to use your knowledge of nature.

Counting

Using the knowledge the students have acquired during the lesson they can: look for the oldest tree in their neighborhood or calculate the sequoia growth factor using the date from the video.

This task may be performed as homework.

The lesson has an interdisciplinary character. Although it is designed as a math lesson, the children will also be using their knowledge of nature. Differentiation (owing to the level of difficulty involved) of tasks helps develop mathematical thinking (in children of different ages and levels of interest in math).

Note

The lesson partly takes place in a wooded area (a forest, a park, a garden, etc.). Find a suitable place beforehand and check what species of tree grow there.

In this lesson, you will cover:

Common Core State Standards:
MATH.CONTENT.4.OA.C.5. Generate a number or shape pattern that follows a given rule. Identify apparent features of the pattern that were not explicit in the rule itself.
MATH.CONTENT.5.OA.B.3. Generate two numerical patterns using two given rules. Identify apparent relationships between corresponding terms. Form ordered pairs consisting of corresponding terms from the two patterns, and graph the ordered pairs on a coordinate plane.

Life Skills:

  • Teamwork and collaboration skills
  • Environmental awareness
  • Information and communication technology skills (ICT)
  • Critical thinking and drawing conclusion
